NOM and Stephen R. Donaldson

Back in 82' my Dad gave a couple books to read from Stephen R. Donaldson called the Thomas Covenant series. Mainly it's a fantasy trilogy based on a fictional successful writer who becomes afflicted with Leprosy. He ends up losing his wife and child due to his wife's revulsion of his current state and becomes a outcast.
Thomas Covenant takes to his role as the town recluse and one day is visited by a repulsive homeless man who starts him on a journey into a world of wonder while populated with powerful and dangerous beings. His story is one of redemption and it would lead to a second follow up trilogy.

The main character would now be joined by emotionally scarred woman from his world and the two of them would be confronted by a soul rending evil destroying the world he fought to save in the last series. Eventually the band of heroes that would surround our protagonists would lead over the seas to a land ruled by a dark wizard who had trapped a race of dangerous creatures to gain his power over the populace.

These creatures he caged were named Sandgorgons. They are powerful beings that within their frames are housed the might of Typhoons or earth shattering rage. Eventually one of these monsters is unleashed on our heroes, but is subdued and eventually comes to the aid of main character.

The picture above is based on how I see this creature. Drawn back in 2010 it's been floating around as a black and white and I eventually got down to coloring it. So there's NOM and I would highly suggest the second series over the first. Be warned though you'll need to drag out the Thesaurus due to the Author's use of specialized words that will even stump your english teacher. That's a good thing.
